Thinking about replacing your old floor tiles but not sure what the work involves? This walkthrough follows a floor re-tiling project we completed at Central Imperial @ Geylang, from the existing floor to the finished result.
Step 1: Check the existing floor
Every job starts with a site inspection. We look at the condition of the existing tiles, check for hollow areas, and measure the space so the quotation is accurate. At this project the old floor tiles needed to be fully replaced.
Step 2: Hacking and removal of the old tiles
The existing tiles were hacked and removed, and the debris was bagged for disposal. Walls, doors and fixtures nearby were protected during the work.
Hacking of the old floor, then a new cement screed base.
Step 3: Cement screeding
A new cement screed was laid to create a solid, flat base. A good screed is one of the most important parts of the job: tiles laid on a weak or uneven base are more likely to become hollow or crack later.
Step 4: Tile installation with a levelling system
The new large tiles were laid with tile adhesive and a tile levelling clip system. The clips hold neighbouring tiles at the same height while the adhesive sets, which helps avoid "lippage" (raised tile edges) and gives a smoother, more even floor.
Levelling clips during installation, and the finished floor.
Step 5: Grouting, cleaning and handover
Once the tiles were set, the clips were removed, the joints were grouted and the floor was cleaned. The living area and bedroom were handed over with a clean, even finish.
